PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Residency
Last update:2/4/2008
History of the Program
The James A Haley VA has offered an informatics residency in the past, producing graduates in 2000 and 2001. Due to VA Central Office requirements for funding the program, it was necessary to seek accreditation in order to continue taking residents. There was some reluctance on the part of the program director to seek accreditation and as a result no informatics residencies were offered after 2001.
There were a number of reasons for this reluctance. First of all, there was some discussion about the need for a PGY1 prior to specializing in Informatics. Neither of the previous residents had taken a general practice residency prior to entering Informatics and both did quite well. Also, at the time, there was not much interaction between ASHP and AMIA, and the level of expertise in Informatics, at ASHP, appeared less than optimal.
The situation has changed, and ASHP has representation at AMIA and vice versa. AMIA has established draft goals and objectives for a Pharmacy Informatics resident which appear to be acceptable to ASHP. As a result, it was decided to pursue accredition, though the program director, and others in the field of Pharmacy Informatics still argue that there ought to be a mechanism to start the program without requiring a PGY1. Unless and until the ASHP changes their requirements, an applicant must either have completed, or be in the process of completing, a PGY1 residency prior to applying to the program.
